KALI - FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS
Kali or FMA (Filipino Martial Arts), is a blended Southeast Asian martial art that comes from the Philippines. It teaches a variety of weapon based, and empty hand techniques.
In this class we primarily focus on the use of Kali weaponry and empty hand close quarters tactics. We use a lot of drills to help teach the proper reflexes at both of these ranges. The drills used are very adaptive and help to teach a wide variety of defensive and offensive reactions. Additionally, the weaponry drills taught by Kali are amazing at developing coordination, timing and distance management.
Kali can be broken down into twelve distinct areas..
1. Single Stick / Sword
2. Double Stick / Sword
3. Stick / Sword & Dagger
4. Double Dagger
5. Single Dagger
6. Palm Stick
7. Empty Hands (Locks, Sweeps, Throws, and Striking)
8. Long Weapons (Staff & Spear)
9. Flexible Weapons (eg. Rope)
10. Thrown Weapons
11. Projectiles (eg. Bow & Arrow)
12. Mental, Emotional, Spiritual, Artistic and Healing Arts
Our Kali program focuses on the first 9 of these 12 areas. The wealth of material in these nine areas is amazing and could be studied for a lifetime.
Our Kali - FMA classes are not workout focused like some of our other classes, they are more flow and drill based. As stated above, the drills are designed to help students develop proper defensive reflexes and timing. The drills used in these classes are very fun and deep. They can be learned quickly, but can take a lifetime to master. Drilling in this fashion allows students to get a lot of practice in, without it feeling boring or routine. In order to develop an actual usable skill, it takes hours and hours of practice. The drills used in these classes help to streamline that process.
Our Kali -FMA curriculum has been passed down to us from Guro Rick Faye from the internationally known, Minnesota Kali Group (MKG), and from Guro Dan Inosanto, who is the foremost expert on Kali in the United States, plus was one of Bruce Lee's closest friends and training partners. We continue to study under both of these amazing martial artists to continually grow and expand upon our program.
